Adelaide Hills Without a Car

You do not need a car to visit the Adelaide Hills wineries. The easiest way to choose your own cellar doors is the Adelaide Hills & Hahndorf Hop-On Hop-Off Wine Tour: a bus leaves Stamford Plaza on North Terrace at 10 am, loops through 8 to 10 wineries and venues around Hahndorf, and has you back in Adelaide at about 5 pm, from $71 per person. If you want everything arranged, a small-group or private tour collects you from your accommodation. If you like to ride, there are guided and self-guided e-bike tours. And if you want to keep it simple and cheap, Adelaide Metro buses reach Hahndorf, where a handful of wine outlets sit within walking distance of Main Street.

Do you need a car in Adelaide?

Not for a Hills wine day. The Hills begin at the city’s eastern edge, and Hahndorf is about a 30-minute drive along the South Eastern Freeway, so a day trip from the city is easy to arrange. The catch is the spread. The wine region runs as a band about 70 km long with around 50 cellar doors, and regional tourism names only Sidewood, Ambleside Distillers and the Hahndorf venues as reachable by bus. For anywhere else, plan on a tour, a bike or a booked driver.

There is also the law. In South Australia, full licence holders must stay below a blood alcohol reading of 0.05, and learner, provisional and probationary drivers must have zero. A flight at each of three or four cellar doors does not fit either rule, so either one person in the group stays off the wine or the car stays in Adelaide.

Option 1: the hop-on hop-off wine bus

This is the closest thing the Hills has to a wine tour bus, and it suits anyone who wants to pick their own venues. Run by Trail Hopper, it works like this:

• Board at Stamford Plaza, 150 North Terrace, at 10:00 am, or join in the Hills at Hahndorf Academy, 55 Main Street, at 10:50 am. There is no hotel pickup.
• The loop covers 8 to 10 wineries and venues and takes about an hour to go round.
• Hop off at up to four stops from the timetable. The bus repeats the same schedule each hour.
• The return to Adelaide is at about 5:00 pm.

The ticket is transport only. Tasting fees are paid at each venue, and lunch and drinks are extra. At the cellar doors we checked, a standard flight cost roughly A$10 to A$45, so a four-stop day adds a real sum on top of the $71 fare. Reviewers mention it too: one suggests budgeting extra for each winery, and another advises telling staff you are on a timetable and asking for the flight to be poured all at once. Stops travellers name include Shaw + Smith, Lot 100 and Sidewood, with time in Hahndorf itself.

It has 4.8 from 155 Viator reviews, and a solo traveller described the group as friendly and inclusive. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, per the booking page. Option 2: a small-group tour with hotel pickup

If you would rather not plan anything, a guided day tour handles the route, the tastings and lunch.

• Hills & Hahndorf Hideaway tour: pickup from selected Adelaide city hotels between 8:50 and 9:10 am (Glenelg can be arranged for an extra fee; no Airbnb pickups). Tastings at The Lane and Sidewood, a two-course German lunch in Hahndorf and a maximum of eight guests. From $175 per person, 4.8 from 205 Viator reviews. Option 3: a private driver-guide

For two to four people who want to choose the wineries, a private tour removes the timetable. The Private Wine Tours McLaren Vale or Adelaide Hills includes pickup from Adelaide Airport, the CBD, Glenelg and suburbs south to Port Noarlunga, in a Toyota Prado for up to four people who know each other. It costs from $171 per person, with the per-person price falling as the group grows, and has 5.0 from 78 Viator reviews. Tastings and lunch are paid separately. Option 4: an e-bike tour

E-bikes cover the gaps between cellar doors without a driver, though you should pace the tastings accordingly.

• Hahndorf Food & Wine E-Bike Tour: guided, five hours, starting at The Lane Vineyard. A Shaw + Smith flight, a tasting at The Lane, an Udder Delights cheese board and seasonal strawberry picking at Beerenberg are included; lunch is not. The operator’s GetYourGuide listing puts the ride at about 20 km and calls it appropriate for beginners, though it recommends some previous riding experience. Not for under-18s. • Adelaide Hills Self-guided E-Bike Wine Tour with Lunch: you ride with a preloaded GPS from the Goat Shed in Belair National Park, starting between 9 and 10 am and finishing about 3 pm. The route covers 30 to 50 km, mostly off-road and on quiet back roads, to a tasting and platter lunch at Deviation Road or Tapanappa; a second winery’s tasting costs extra. From $123 per person, 4.9 from 8 GetYourGuide reviews. One reviewer warns of a lot of uphill riding and recommends it only for people in good shape.

Option 5: the bus to Hahndorf and a walk

The cheapest route is public transport. Adelaide Metro recommends the 801 and T801 buses for visiting Hahndorf from the city. The T801 is a limited-stop weekday service between the city and Mount Barker via Hahndorf, Bridgewater, Aldgate and Stirling, and the 801 stops at all stops early in the morning, at night and at weekends. We could not confirm an official journey time, so check the Adelaide Metro journey planner before you go.

Once you are in Hahndorf, regional tourism describes three walks:

• A 1.5 km circuit of four wine outlets from the middle of Main Street, including Somerled and the Adelaide Hills Wine Bar.
• A 7 km loop taking in Sidewood, Hahndorf Hill Winery and Ambleside Distillers.
• A 10 km walk out to The Lane, which takes about three hours.

Rideshare and taxis

Regional tourism says Uber is active in the Hills and extends as far east as Bridgewater, which covers the Stirling side of the Hills. Beyond that, around Woodside, Lobethal, Lenswood and Balhannah, coverage is not assured, so you could struggle to get a ride back from a rural cellar door. We could not confirm taxi availability in the Hills either. If you plan to use rideshare, book your venues close together and have a fallback for the return. Many cellar doors keep different hours, too, so check ahead, especially Monday to Wednesday.

Which car-free option suits you

• Choosing your own cellar doors on a budget: the hop-on hop-off bus.
• Everything arranged, tastings and lunch included: a small-group tour with pickup.
• A couple or a group of four with firm ideas: a private driver.
• Active travellers: a guided or self-guided e-bike.
• A slow day in one town: the 801 bus to Hahndorf and a walk.
