Small Group Wine Tours Compared

The small-group wine tour to book in the Adelaide Hills is the Small-group Adelaide Hills & Hahndorf Hideaway. It takes a maximum of 8 travellers per booking and includes two cellar-door tastings, cheese, chocolate and a 2-course German lunch in Hahndorf, from $175 per person, and rates 4.8 from 205 Viator reviews. The catch is that all sales are final. If you need free cancellation, the e-bike tour has the same cap of 8, and if your party is four or fewer and wants the car to itself, a private tour starts at about the same price per head, before tastings and lunch.

Group size is the thing to compare, because the tours on this site range from 8 per booking to 30 people a day. Prices below are September 2026 “from” figures per person; the live price is on each booking page.

Why group size matters on a Hills wine day

Cellar doors in the Adelaide Hills are set up for small parties. Shaw + Smith asks groups of more than 12 to book a private function. Deviation Road caps online bookings at 8 on weekend afternoons and puts groups of 9 to 35 into morning sessions. Hahndorf Hill runs its group tastings for 9 or more guests, booked in advance. A tour that stays around eight people fits the ordinary tasting room; a coachload gets a group format.

Reviewers notice the difference too. On the Hideaway, one wrote that “smaller tours are so much better”, another had a group of five that “made it very friendly”, and a third found they were the only guests that day.

Per booking or per tour: read the listing closely

On most Viator listings the maximum is the largest party you can put on one booking. It does not tell you how many other bookings share the vehicle. Two listings here describe the whole group. See Adelaide’s day tour says “small-group tour maximum 18 participants”, and Sip & Scenic says numbers “can reach up to 30 in a day” and may travel by car, minibus or coach.

For everything else, the per-booking cap is the best guide the listings give, and the reviews fill in the rest. Hideaway guests describe groups of five or smaller. An e-bike couple had the guide to themselves. A Discover Hahndorf reviewer counted five couples. Two GetYourGuide reviewers on the Wine and/or Gin Tour ended up on what was in effect a private tour for two. You may get a quiet day, but only a private booking guarantees it.

The tours that stay small

The Hideaway runs for 8 hours: Mount Lofty Summit, Beerenberg, a 45-minute tasting at The Lane Vineyard, Melba’s Chocolate Factory, Woodside Cheese, lunch and an hour of free time in Hahndorf, then a tasting at Sidewood Estate (The Lane or Nepenthe can stand in). Pickup is from Adelaide CBD hotels between 8:50 and 9:10am, Glenelg is extra, and the minimum age is 18. The Hahndorf Food & Wine E-Bike Tour (from $189, 5.0 from 59 Viator reviews) also caps bookings at 8. It starts at The Lane Vineyard, so you make your own way there, and includes a Shaw + Smith wine flight, a tasting at The Lane, an Udder Delights cheese board and strawberry picking at Beerenberg in season. The operator’s GetYourGuide listing of the same tour gives about 20 km of riding. It is a 6-hour village day: Mount Lofty, Beerenberg, Melba’s, lunch at The Haus with a glass of wine or beer, and about two hours free in Hahndorf. There is no cellar-door tasting in the itinerary. You get a Haigh’s chocolate factory tour, Mount Lofty, gin at Grünthal Brew, a flight at Golding Wines, lunch in Hahndorf, Beerenberg and a last tasting at Sidewood. The bigger formats, and who they suit

A larger group is not automatically a worse day. On the Adelaide Hills & Hahndorf Hop-On Hop-Off Wine Tour (from $71, 4.8 from 155 Viator reviews) the bus is shared, but you choose up to four stops from a loop of 8 to 10 venues and taste alone or with your own party. Tasting fees and lunch are extra.

Adelaide Highlights, Hahndorf & McLaren Vale (from $96, 4.9 from 541 Viator reviews, the most reviewed tour on this site) caps each departure at 18 and adds a city tour and McLaren Vale tastings; lunch in Hahndorf is at your own cost. Experience Hahndorf & Barossa (from $125, 4.9 from 496 Viator reviews) takes up to 24 per booking to reach two regions in one day. Sip & Scenic (from $135, 4.6 from 7 Viator reviews) includes lunch but can carry up to 30 people a day.

When to go private instead

If you are two to four people, a private tour removes the question of who else is on board.

Booking for your own group

If you are organising five to twelve friends, the per-booking cap decides what you can book in one go: 8 on the Hideaway and the e-bike tour, 11 on Discover Hahndorf, 12 on the Viator listing of the Wine and/or Gin Tour, and 15 on the hop-on hop-off. Beyond that, Experience Hahndorf & Barossa takes 24. Cellar doors ask for bookings especially at weekends, so plan a group day early.
