Shane Buckley is the owner-operator and drives a Toyota Prado GXL for groups of up to four people who know each other. The day runs 6 to 7 hours in the Adelaide Hills or McLaren Vale. You can nominate your own itinerary or let Shane create one, and the plan can change as you travel. Pickup from Adelaide Airport, the CBD, Glenelg and anywhere south to Port Noarlunga is included. Hosts John or Mary drive a BMW 530i M Sport sedan or a RAV4 Hybrid. The tour has a four-hour minimum, and you can extend it on the day. CBD pickup is included, with the Adina Apartments at 2 Flinders Street as the set pickup spot; other suburbs are quoted when you give the address. Lunch, food and drinks are extra. Small Batch luxury private day: tastings and lunch included

The Adelaide Hills Luxury Wine Tour visits four boutique wineries, including Deviation Road for sparkling and Shaw + Smith for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Lunch is at the Uraidla Hotel with a local wine, beer or soft drink, and tasting fees at the wineries are included. Pickup is 9:30 am from city or Glenelg accommodation, the day runs 6 to 8 hours and bookings take up to six people. The Adelaide Hills & Hahndorf Private Wine and Scenic Tour runs 7.5 hours in a minivan for up to six. You agree the itinerary with the operator after booking: more wineries, or time in Hahndorf, Melba’s Chocolate, Woodside Cheese, Mount Lofty and Beerenberg. The operator notes that all wineries charge tasting fees at your own cost, and lunch at a German pub or a winery is booked for you but paid by you. From $239 per person, 5.0 from 3 Viator reviews.

Tipsy Touring private Hahndorf day: two tastings included

The Hahndorf Private Day Tour with Wine Tastings includes a standard tasting at two cellar doors, a stop at Mount Lofty Summit and about two hours in Hahndorf, where lunch is at your own cost. The last part of the day is your choice of another winery, a brewery, Beerenberg or Melba’s. It runs 7 hours from your accommodation, takes up to five per booking and costs from $178 per person. What a couple pays, and what four pay

The Buckley Estate figures are the supplier’s own party-size rates, with the four-person rate converted at the same exchange rate as Viator’s $171 from-price. Where a listing shows one per-person rate, we have applied it to both party sizes; the booking page confirms the figure for your group. The per-car tour looks cheapest for four, but it is a four-hour day against six to eight hours for the others, so compare the hours as well as the total.

The costs on top: tastings, lunch and tips

Unless your tour includes them, cellar door tastings are paid at each venue. A standard flight at the wineries we checked runs from about A$10 to A$45. Shaw + Smith’s Classic Flight is A$25 for five wines, Golding’s seated flights start from A$10 and Bird in Hand’s flights run A$20 to A$40. Premium experiences cost more, such as Shaw + Smith’s two-hour Balhannah Tour at A$140.

Do not count on getting the fee back when you buy a bottle. Deviation Road states that its flights are not redeemable on purchase. Three flights each adds roughly A$30 to A$135 per person to a tour that excludes them, before lunch. Tips are extra on the Small Batch day.

Planning the day: bookings and opening days

A private tour lets you choose the cellar doors, so check they are open on your day. The regional tourism body warns that many cellar doors keep different hours, especially Monday to Wednesday.

• Petaluma’s cellar door at 254 Pfeiffer Road, Woodside, is open Saturday and Sunday only at the moment, with weekdays closed for renovation.
• Nepenthe in Balhannah opens Tuesday to Sunday.
• Golding says bookings are essential, Shaw + Smith strongly encourages them at weekends, and Deviation Road caps online bookings at eight on weekend afternoons.

Hahndorf is about 30 minutes from Adelaide by the South Eastern Freeway, and Woodside about 40, so a 6 to 7 hour day leaves room for several cellar doors and a proper lunch. Nobody in your party drives, which matters: in South Australia the limit for full licence holders is 0.05, and learner and provisional drivers must be at zero. Tasting is for over-18s only.
