Which tours stop in Hahndorf, and for how long

Hahndorf is about 30 minutes from Adelaide along the South Eastern Freeway, and most Adelaide Hills day tours pass through it. The differences are how long you get in the village, whether the tastings happen at Hahndorf cellar doors or further out, and what lunch is.

Hahndorf & Hills Wine and/or Gin Tour (from $232, 5.0 from 5 GetYourGuide reviews) adds a Haigh’s chocolate factory tour (Melba’s on Sundays), gin at Grünthal Brew and a flight at Golding Wines in Lobethal, then two hours in Hahndorf with lunch and a last tasting at Sidewood. The Adelaide Hills & Hahndorf Hop-On Hop-Off Wine Tour (from $71, 4.8 from 155 Viator reviews) lets you board at Hahndorf Academy, 55 Main Street, at 10:50am, or at Stamford Plaza in the city at 10:00am. The bus loops 8 to 10 venues about once an hour and you choose up to four stops before it heads back around 5pm. Tasting fees and lunch are extra. One reviewer spent more than two hours in Hahndorf itself.

The Hahndorf Food & Wine E-Bike Tour (from $189, 5.0 from 59 Viator reviews) starts at The Lane Vineyard, runs about five hours, and includes a Shaw + Smith flight, a tasting at The Lane, an Udder Delights cheese board and strawberry picking at Beerenberg in season. Lunch is not included and riders must be 18 or over.

Three tours with fewer reviews also give you two hours in the village: Sip & Scenic (from $135, 4.6 from 7 Viator reviews, finishing at Sidewood), the Adelaide Hills Divine Wine Tour (from $211, 5.0 from 2 Viator reviews, with Golding, Nepenthe and Sidewood) and the new Hahndorf private day tour with two tastings (from $178, no reviews yet, lunch at your own cost).

The cellar doors in and around Hahndorf

A handful of cellar doors sit within a short drive of Main Street, and the tours lean on two of them.

• The Lane Vineyard, 5 Ravenswood Lane. A 40 ha estate with the cellar door open daily 10am to 5pm and a restaurant open Thursday to Monday for lunch. The Hideaway and the e-bike tour both taste here.
• Sidewood Estate, 6 River Road. A family-owned winery founded in 2004 whose Hahndorf cellar door, restaurant and cidery opened in 2020. It is open daily 11am to 5pm, with self-guided flights of roughly A$20 to A$45. The Hideaway, the Wine and/or Gin Tour, Sip & Scenic and the Divine Wine Tour finish here.
• Hahndorf Hill Winery, 38 Pain Road. The Grüner Veltliner specialist; James Halliday wrote that “Hahndorf Hill writes the book on Gruner Veltliner”. Its ChocoVino pairs wine with chocolate, and the group version costs A$32 per person for 9 to 14 guests, booked ahead. None of the tours on this site lists it, so visit on a private tour or on foot.
• Somerled, in the village. A tasting room known for méthode traditionnelle sparkling, open from 11am.

A little further out, Nepenthe (Balhannah, Tuesday to Sunday) is the Hideaway’s alternative second stop, and Shaw + Smith (Balhannah, daily, Classic Flight A$25 for five wines) is on the e-bike route.

When a tour does not include tastings, you pay the fee at the counter. Do not count on it coming off a bottle purchase; some cellar doors say plainly that flights are not redeemable. Regional tourism also warns that opening hours vary, especially Monday to Wednesday, so check ahead.

Walking Main Street between tastings

Hahndorf is compact enough to taste on foot. Adelaide Hills Tourism describes a 1.5 km circuit of four wine outlets from the middle of Main Street, including Somerled and the Adelaide Hills Wine Bar. For a longer day it suggests a 7 km loop via Sidewood, Hahndorf Hill Winery and Ambleside Distillers, or a walk of about 10 km (around three hours) out to The Lane.

Between glasses, the 1857 Hahndorf Academy holds changing exhibitions, original Hans Heysen sketches and a German migration museum. On the edge of town, Beerenberg’s strawberry patch opens for picking from November to April, weather and fruit permitting, at A$5 entry and A$13.50 per kilo. Several tours stop at the farm shop. On most, picking is at your own cost; the e-bike tour includes it in season.

Lunch on a Hahndorf tour

Lunch is where the tours differ most:

• The Hideaway includes a 2-course German lunch with a glass of beer or wine, with a vegetarian option if you ask when booking. One reviewer ate at The Haus.
• Discover Hahndorf seats you at The Haus, choosing from four dishes, with an Adelaide Hills wine or a German beer on tap.
• The Wine and/or Gin Tour includes lunch at Haus Hahndorf.
• The hop-on hop-off, the e-bike tour and most private tours leave lunch to you, which in Hahndorf means a choice of the cafés, pubs and restaurants along Main Street.

Hahndorf’s German story in two minutes

Hahndorf was founded in 1839 by Lutheran settlers from Prussia who arrived on the ship Zebra in December 1838. They named the village after its Danish captain, Dirk Hahn, and the names of the 52 pioneering families are on the Pioneer Memorial Gardens gates. South Australian Tourism calls it the oldest surviving Germanic settlement in Australia.

Anti-German feeling in 1917 saw the town renamed Ambleside; the name Hahndorf came back in 1935. The trees along Main Street were first planted in 1885, the freeway took through traffic away in 1974, and the village became a State Heritage Area in 1988. Most of the tours on this site give you an hour or two there to see it.

Getting there without driving

A guided tour solves the drink-driving question, and South Australia’s limit is 0.05 BAC for full licence holders and zero for learner and provisional drivers. If you are staying in the village, the hop-on hop-off can collect you at Hahndorf Academy and the Wine and/or Gin Tour picks up from Hahndorf accommodation.
