When to Visit the Adelaide Hills

The best time to visit the Adelaide Hills for a wine day is March to May, and April if you can choose only one month. The hottest weeks are over, April averages a 16.7 °C maximum at Mount Lofty, vintage is often still under way, and the liquidambars in Stirling are turning. October and November come a close second. Summer works if you plan around the heat, and winter suits anyone happy to taste indoors with rain on the roof.

Whatever the month, the Adelaide Hills & Hahndorf hop-on hop-off wine tour is the easiest booking to fit around the weather. How much cooler the Hills are than Adelaide

The wine region covers the parts of the Hills above 300 m, and temperature falls by about 0.5 °C for every 100 m of height. By day the Hills run about 3–6 °C cooler than the city, depending on altitude, so a warm Adelaide morning can still call for a jacket at the summit. Long-term Bureau of Meteorology averages (maximum / minimum, °C):

Rain follows a clear yearly pattern. May to September is the wet season at Mount Lofty, with June the wettest month at about 148 mm. December to March is dry, with 32–47 mm a month. Over a year the higher Hills get close to 1,000 mm, almost double the city’s 525 mm.

Autumn, March to May: the best overall window

Three things line up in autumn. The first is vintage. Harvest in the Hills falls in late summer and autumn, roughly February to April, and the timing moves from year to year: the 2026 season ran three to four weeks behind the long-term average. March and April give you the best odds of visiting while grapes are coming in, though nobody can promise a date months ahead.

The second is colour. Stirling’s liquidambars start turning in early April and are usually at their best from mid to late April, with autumn colour running from roughly late March into May. Mount Lofty Botanic Garden is at its most vivid in March and April.

The third is Chardonnay, the most planted grape in the Hills. In 2026 the regional wine association ran Chardonnay May across the whole month, with tastings, masterclasses and a passport trail. Check the association’s events page for the next edition before you plan around it.

Early autumn also overlaps the end of strawberry season. Picking at Beerenberg Farm outside Hahndorf runs from November to April, weather and fruit permitting, and the patch can close on hot days or once it is picked out.

Mild days make autumn a good season for being outdoors between tastings. Spring, September to November: the runner-up

The wet season tails off through September, which still averages about 106 mm at Mount Lofty. By October the summit averages a 15.9 °C maximum and Lenswood 17.8 °C, with cool nights around 8 °C. Strawberry picking reopens in November. Early spring is still wet, so a day that mixes tastings with time in town is a safe choice.

The Discover Hahndorf: Wine, Beer, Lunch & Village Time tour fits that mixed forecast. It visits Mount Lofty Summit, drives through Stirling and Aldgate, stops at Beerenberg and Melba’s Chocolate, then sits you down for a gourmet lunch at The Haus in Hahndorf with a glass of wine or a German beer, followed by about two hours of free time on Main Street. Summer, December to February: warm, dry and fire-aware

January averages 23.5 °C at Mount Lofty, about five degrees below the city, so the Hills are a sensible escape on a warm Adelaide day. Rainfall is low and strawberry picking is in full swing.

Summer is also bushfire season, and a high fire danger rating can change a tour day. Cleland National Park, which includes Mount Lofty Summit, closes on days of Catastrophic Fire Danger and may also close on Extreme Fire Danger days. On 24 January 2026 the park, the wildlife park and the summit gift shop all closed for 24 hours on an Extreme rating. Tour listings plan for this. The Hideaway tour notes that Mount Lofty may be closed on extreme fire-risk days, and that Woodside Cheese may close on days over 30 °C.

Winter, June to August: cool, wet and made for tasting rooms

July averages 9.1 °C by day at Mount Lofty, and June is the wettest month. There is still plenty to enjoy in winter. Cool-climate Pinot Noir and Shiraz suit the weather, and some cellar doors lean into the season: Barristers Block in Woodside serves winter “Fireside Feed Me” menus in a converted 1850s hayshed.

Winter Reds, which the regional wine association bills as South Australia’s largest winter wine festival, is held in July. The 2026 edition ran 24–26 July with more than 45 events, and Tour + Taste events started from A$25.

For a seated tasting, the Petaluma horseback riding and wine tasting tour finishes by the fire in the cooler months, from $147 per person with 5.0 from 10 GetYourGuide reviews. Petaluma’s cellar door at 254 Pfeiffer Road, Woodside, is currently open on Saturday and Sunday only while weekday renovation works continue.

The best day of the week for Hills cellar doors

Weekends are when cellar doors most want you to book. Shaw + Smith strongly encourages bookings, especially at weekends, and Deviation Road caps online weekend-afternoon bookings at eight people.

Early in the week the problem is the opposite. Regional tourism advises checking opening hours ahead, especially from Monday to Wednesday:

• Nepenthe in Balhannah opens Tuesday to Sunday.
• The Lane’s restaurant opens Thursday to Monday, though its cellar door is open daily.
• Woodside Cheese closes on Wednesdays.
• Petaluma opens on weekends only for now.

That makes Thursday or Friday the easiest fit: most venues are open and weekend demand has not started. If you are driving yourself, remember the limit is 0.05 BAC for full licence holders and zero for learner and provisional drivers, which is a good reason to let a tour do the driving.

Booking when the forecast is uncertain

Most Hills wine tours can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, per the booking page. That covers the hop-on hop-off, the e-bike tour, Discover Hahndorf and the private wine tour for up to four. The private tour’s host can change the itinerary on the day, which helps when the weather turns. The exception is the Small-Group Adelaide Hills & Hahndorf Hideaway. Its listing says all sales are final. It is a full guided day for a small group: from $175 per person with a maximum of eight, tastings at The Lane and Sidewood and a two-course German lunch in Hahndorf, rated 4.8 from 205 Viator reviews. The hop-on hop-off leaves Stamford Plaza on North Terrace at 10 am, or Hahndorf Academy at 10:50 am, and loops through 8–10 venues roughly once an hour. You get off at up to four stops and are back in the city at about 5 pm. Tasting fees and lunch are paid at each venue.
