Climate: altitude against the coast

The two regions sit on opposite sides of Adelaide and feel different underfoot. The Adelaide Hills wine region covers land above 300 m, with its highest vineyards at 600–650 m, and temperature drops about 0.5 °C for every 100 m. McLaren Vale lies south of the city, close to the sea. South Australian Tourism describes it as more than 80 wineries on the doorstep of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s coastline and beaches.

Summer days by the coast run about 5 °C warmer than at Mount Lofty, and winter days are milder too. The Hills get more than twice the rain. For a visit, that means a Hills tasting deck is the cooler choice on a January afternoon, and McLaren Vale is the milder choice on a July one.

What is in the glass

The Hills are white and Pinot country. The 2026 vineyard register puts Chardonnay at 823 ha, Sauvignon Blanc at 795 ha and Pinot Noir at 780 ha, together about two-thirds of the region’s vines. The coolest sites make sparkling wine from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and Shiraz appears in a lighter cool-climate style.

McLaren Vale’s regional body describes the region as renowned for world-class Grenache, Shiraz and a growing range of Mediterranean varieties. Distance from Adelaide

Both regions are close. Hahndorf is about a 30-minute drive from the city along the South Eastern Freeway, and Stirling is only about 15 km from the CBD. McLaren Vale is 40–45 minutes south of Adelaide, by the regional body’s and the state tourism board’s figures.

Travel time is a small difference either way. What matters more is how the day is shaped: a Hills day tends to loop through villages and cellar doors, while a McLaren Vale day can finish on the coast. Nobody tasting all day should drive; South Australia’s limit is under 0.05 BAC for full licence holders and zero for learner and provisional drivers.

Cellar doors and icons

McLaren Vale’s regional body counts more than 90 cellar doors. The Adelaide Hills association counts over 90 wine labels and 50 cellar doors, spread along a band about 70 km long.

McLaren Vale’s best-known landmark is the d’Arenberg Cube, a five-storey building inspired by a Rubik’s Cube that opened in December 2017, with tasting rooms, a restaurant and a gallery. South Australian Tourism names it as the region’s icon. The Hills’ draws are the view from Mount Lofty Summit, the high Piccadilly Valley and Lenswood subregions, and Hahndorf, which South Australian Tourism calls the oldest surviving Germanic settlement in Australia, founded in 1839. Seeing both in one day
